    THE ENGAGEMENT

Announcing your engagement to family and close friends
Once the couple has decided to tie the knot, the families are the first to know about the engagement. Both the parents of the couple come together to get to know each other, to fix the date of the engagement, the wedding, the kind of reception and the myriad other details.

The engagement is considered as the first step towards marriage and a couple's life together with each other.

The Engagement Ring
The engagement ring is the symbol of love and being betrothed to one another. It is not essential to have an engagement ring on one's finger to show that one is now engaged to be married. Many young couples prefer to save the money to a more practical use. While selecting your engagement ring, keep your budget in mind. If possible, select both rings at the same time so that they can compliment one another.

A diamond is considered the first choice for an engagement ring. Although coloured stones have become popular in recent times, many brides prefer semi-precious stones. Others choose according to their birthstones or star signs. Both engagement and wedding rings are often a matching set. The wedding rings are heavier than the engagement rings and bear inscriptions inside, most commonly the initials of the couple and the date of the wedding.

Some commonly popular birthstones
January February March
garnet amethyst aquamarine, bloodstone

April May June
diamond emerald, agate pearl

July August September
ruby carnelian, peridot sapphire

October November December
opal, beryl, moonstone topaz turquoise

The engagement party
Once the parents have met and the rings have been purchased, it is time to make the engagement official. Being very enthusiastic about their children's wedding, the parents may wish to throw a big party or it might be more of a family occasion. You will need to send out invitations to the engagement. The engagement is carried out at the bride's residence. This party may take place at home or other suitable places arranged by the bride's parents. At the function, the bride's father, brother or immediate relatives stand up together and make the announcement of the wedding by proposing a toast to the future bride and groom.

If possible, it would be nice to announce your wedding date on the day of your engagement.

The length of the engagement
The ideal length of an engagement is between three to six months. This permits the couple to have enough time to make the wedding arrangements and also to decide and discuss their future, unless there is need for a longer engagement period which gives the couple time to decide if they have made the right decision in wanting to get married to each other and spend the rest of their lives.
